A Cry In The Night

CryShhh. Listen carefully. Can you hear it? Come on, strain your ears. Can you hear it now, the cry that breaks the stillness of the night? A cry that tears right through your soul? I am assuming of course, that you have a soul.

It’s a cry for help that makes the blood curdle. It’s the cry of a woman in agony. A woman being beaten mercilessly; a young girl being brutally raped; a little girl begging and pleading for her attacker to stop mauling her undeveloped young body; a young bride being set on fire for not bringing enough dowry; an adolescent girl screaming in unbearable pain as her genitals are being mutilated (yes folks, Female Genital Mutilation happens in India too! Surprise!

And what do you do when you hear this desperate cry for help? Rush out and see what’s wrong and try to help? NOOOOOOOOOOO! You step inside and lock the doors and windows so that you can lull yourself into a false sense of security. “Oh it’s happening to someone else, not to me or my near and dear ones. So why bother?” And the men folk in the family; do they “man up” and rush out to investigate? NOOOOOOO once again. After all, its women’s lot and they just have to grin and bear it, right?

Sorry to burst your bubbles, folks. Today, the cry in the night is from someone else. Tomorrow, it could be you, begging and groveling for mercy, screaming for help. And no, I haven’t forgotten about your men folk. Are you listening guys? Tomorrow, it could be your wife, mother, sister or daughter crying for help. Wouldn’t you like for someone to help her? Or would you rather they “grin and bear it” because it’s how things are for women?

It’s time to make some hard choices, take some tough decisions. Are you going to close your eyes (and ears) whenever you come across a lady in dire need of help? Or are you going to buck up and do the right thing? Ask yourself these questions and remember that your answers will say a lot about the kind of person you are.

Try to be a better person, a better human being. That’s all I ask. When you hear a cry for help, do not hesitate. Someone out there desperately needs your help.

Not responding to help when required and then acting as if you are very hurt and angry when you watch the news is not the name of the game, its time to wake up and smell the coffee.
