Gender Discrimination- Who Started it?

sheThis is a really old question and there is no answer for it but I am going to try and find an answer to this. I asked my parents who told me that it’s not something they started but it was something that existed long before they took birth on this planet. They asked me instead and I said; it’s not my generation either. If I ask you; you are going to say you don’t know and that it’s not you and when you ask me, my answer is going to be similar. After pondering on this for a while I suddenly stumbled upon the answer, it’s not the person it’s our mindset.

In Lady Doak College we once had a class taken by Dr. Christianna Singh where we were given some chits with words like beautiful, mechanic, hair dresser, handsome, postman etc and then we were asked to sit on the right if you felt it was a girly term or sit on the left if it was a manly term. Sure enough the one who had beautiful went right and the one who had handsome went left.

She asked us to check the dictionary meaning for handsome and it was –having an attractive, well-proportioned and imposing appearance suggestive of health and strength; good-looking.

Now, think again where does it suggest that handsome is a manly term. So today I am asking you to think like this and tell me where it is written that a mechanic has to be a guy and hair dresser has to be girl. Let’s face facts there are a whole load of men who have succeeded in fields which were considered girly and there are a whole lot of women who have achieved success in a lot of fields which are considered manly.

All this is fixed in our mind and most of it is there just because it’s been there for a long time. It’s time to work on our minds and change gears. There is no point driving a car all through the journey on first gear and there has to be a time to change and move into a better gear.

Another incident which changed my mindset was an answer that I got from my friend. This beautiful Punjabi girl has lovely long hair, was a topper and I mean everything was just perfect about her, leaving the one thing that she hadn’t got her ears pierced. U asked her why she didn’t do it and her answer was- “Wahe Guru has given me beautiful ears why should I prick them and where is it written that if you are girl you should pierce them and if you are a guy you should not????”

A little bit research into all this and I discovered some age old facts. A man has vision which can measure widths depth etc. A lady on the other hand has vision which is 360 degrees. This was the primary reason why during the early man times, man went hunting and the lady stayed back at home and looked after the kids. Yes, men and women are totally different in the way that we are made but we all have two major strengths and that is adaptability and evolution. That’s the reason why we are able to achieve such wonderful feats as humans.

Just adapt and evolve your mindset as well and slowly and steadily we can get rid of gender discrimination.

Wish our mindset could be changed like changing our clothes. This is not easy and will take a very long time.

Very happy that man is not always blamed for everything that goes or has gone wrong. Kudos Madam Vishesta for the unusual approach.
