Pasand Apni Apni
My hubby is as usual late from office. I quickly serve dinner, wash the dishes, clean the kitchen, racing against time and finally have a sense of accomplishment at 10:25 pm (5 more minutes for my TV time). As I enter the living room my happiness is short lived as there is one more hurdle “The battle for remote”. On seeing me, my mil who is hanging on to every word of good bye speech in the Super Singer show gets up but not without adding a snide remark “Every day is a serial do you have to see it on TV too”. I pretend to be deaf as I concentrate on the remote which is in the mercy of my hubby. After juggling between mindless comedy and news he hands over the remote adding a comment “Why do you sacrifice your sleep and watch this crap?” Finally I have the TV and the room to myself and I sit back to watch my favorite serial.
What is it in a serial that draws us the average Indian middle class housewives (the target audience by the way)? Well of course the power packed performances of woman actors who make this concoction of drama, romance, suspense, tragedy etc. tick. Right from the days of Lajjoji in Buniyaad(good old DD) to Priya in Bade Achhe Lagte Hai woman actors are the back bone of a serial.
Be it as a rocking home maker, a career woman, a vamp, single mother a suffering daughter in law or for that matter , even a terrible mother in law these actors have carved a niche for themselves in their respective roles. By and large woman actors in serials today portray a progressive personality. Even the stereo type saans bahu ones have veered towards showcasing a traditional yet modern, respectful yet assertive bahus. Their wardrobe is in sync with current trend and a forty year old mom looks as chic as her daughter. Be it propagating family values, celebration of festivals, marriage functions these woman actors add life and color to the package.
They relate to the viewers to such an extent that in the course of these mega serials (which spans over 2-3 years) their real identity gets lost in their role identity.Contrary to the common perception they are even popular with the working class, youngsters, and even male viewers (see the comments on the websites of these serials).Their reach is so wide and that even super stars vie for screen space with them to promote their films.
The ultimate goal of any serial is to entertain and definitely no viewer gets influenced by these serials (credit us with that much sense). The strength of the woman actor in these serials is her appeal and using this if she sends positive vibes it gives a sense of feel good to the entertainment. Somewhere this can be a good impact.
Finally whether she is good or bad, strong or weak, ugly or beautiful every woman actor has her share of admirers as we viewers have our Pasand Apni Apni.
