The Real Gentleman
Let me ask all of you ladies out there a question. Who is a real gentleman? And yes, I want an honest answer. Is he the one who’s swoon-worthy, who looks too handsome for his own good? Ahh…. I can see some of you drooling at the prospect. Or is he the one who thinks he’s a modern-day Mr. Darcy and opens car doors and pulls out chairs in restaurants for you and bows and kisses your hand when you wish him good-night at your door? Or is he the one who sweeps you off your feet by showering you with expensive gifts?
C’mon my lovelies. I’m waiting for an answer. Oh well, let me save you the trouble. The answer? Prepare to be shocked. NONE OF THE ABOVE. Are you waving daggers at me? Maybe you expect me to turn tail and run, but I won’t. Because, guess what? I’m telling the truth and you know it!
While good looks, good manners and buying gifts are qualities to be admired, they are not the benchmark by which we determine whether or not a particular man is a REAL gentleman.
A real gentleman is one who treats his partner as a real lady. No, I’m not talking about opening car doors here (surely we’re capable of doing that for ourselves). I’m talking about respect. A real gentleman is the one who respects his lady as an equal partner in his life. He’s the one who wishes his lady (you, my lovelies) to walk BESIDE him in the journey of life rather than blindly follow his lead and walk BEHIND him. He’s the one who acknowledges your contributions to his life and gives you due credit. He’s the one who CONSULTS with you before making a decision that affects both your lives rather than peremptorily giving an ORDER and expecting you to snap to it. He’s the one who takes care of you when you’re sick instead of expecting you to run yourself ragged, your health notwithstanding. He’s the one who holds you when you fall and later tells you “It’s all in the game, honey.” Finally gals, a real gentleman is the one who stands up for you when his family or any other “well-wisher” is trying to tell him how to “keep his wife in line.”
Now tell me which sort of man you’d rather prefer. Me, I’d take the REAL gentleman any day, looks and other factors notwithstanding.
