The Right to Life
Nirbhaya dies a year ago, we all march on streets, talk about the brave soul and then slowly we just forget the entire episode. Good news was that every rape case was getting reported and for once was not hidden but was brought out in every news channel and on the front page of every newspaper. I felt we had taken a step ahead as at least people were coming forward and reporting such gruesome acts.
Come the big day when the men who raped Nirbhaya were given the death sentence. Man I was sure happy and I know that many of you too were happy. Instant thoughts that came into my head was that this judgment would finally bring in a fear and there would be a massive drop in the number of rapes.
Now lets get back to today. Have the rapes reduced I don’t think so. A kangaroo court decides to go ahead and punish a girl and the punishment awarded is gang rape. In a country where virginity is such a big issue and women are supposed to be given the respect of Goddess, this punishment just breaks all standards of morality and decency.
Ladies time and again we have been urging you. Don’t always just blame the men folk. We too have an important part to play. Rape happens as men feel we are helpless and need to be under their control. They feel we are worthless and we can be treated any way. Action begins at home. Work with your kids and with your male siblings. Teach them to respect all women. If a boy is reprimanded at home the first time he whistles at a girl he will never think beyond that.
Stop acting like you are the abela nari. No you are not. You are the ones that give birth to kids. You are the ones that multi task and make families. Learn self defense. Carry a pepper spray can in your bag, use your nails, use your presence of mind. Do not get into situations where you can be stuck with men all alone.
This post is termed the right to life. When someone points a gun at you; you are allowed to shoot him back, it’s called self defense. In the same way if someone assaults you sexually too you must fight and defend yourself. Everyone has a right to life and you as a women are no different. The one who brings life on to earth surely deserves the right to life. There is no man in this world who is allowed to deny you your right to life.
We at Athenastake have been writing day in and day out about women’s issues. This is so that we can join hands and make a change. Giving us a reservation or talking about women empowerment is not enough. First make sure that no one challenges your right to life. Secondly take charge of your life and achieve all that you want. Athenastake is with all you women and urges you to move ahead and live life.
